GeneSTAR Report

Technology Aids Breeding Integrity

GeneSTAR is a multi-gene marker test for marbling, tenderness and feed efficiency, and uses state-of-the-art DNA technology to simultaneously determine the result for 12 DNA markers (four for marbling, four for tenderness and four for feed efficiency) at the current time.

These tests are very carefully balanced and conducted in Genetic Solutions' internationally-accredited laboratory under a strict quality system. Results are reported as a star result for each individual marker and as a combined star rating for each trait.

There is a maximum rating of eight stars available for each of the three traits - four from the sire and four from the dam - with a score of eight stars for one of the individual traits being the highest possible score and the highest possible genetic predictability for this trait to be passed onto the progeny of the animal with this score.

With comparison of breed average results of these tests, the table below is able to indicate the heritable predictability of these desirable traits or factors. This assists a cattle producer to select the breed most likely to complement the requirements for his breeding program if he is cross-breeding for commercial meat production.

Similarly he can select a pure breed most appropriate for his type of country and pasture, and suitability for the market to be supplied.

It is apparent from this graphic table that gene testing has indicated that Bazadais are equal and better for the marbling gene compared with other breeds (with the exception of the well-known extreme marbling of the Wagyu breed which, however, cannot compete on the basis of weight for age.

The Bazadais breed has a clearly superior balance of feed efficiency with tenderness across all breeds.

This confirms to the producers and potential buyers that Bazadais genetics will not only improve turn-off weights in shorter intervals more economically, but also offer an improved meat quality of superior tenderness for the all-important consumer.

It is the use of such new technologies to describe and select the genetic capabilities of the Bazadais breed, and compare individual animals for superior factors, which enables the Australian Bazadais Cattle Society to maintain breed integrity and offer buyers the security of DNA tested and verified pedigrees.
